Founded in 2003 by Paul Familetti and Steven Lowenthal, Plastic Records’ limited-edition releases showcase artists at distinct moments in their respective musical journeys. The label partners with artists seeking to break their own formula, experiment and add a stand out release to their catalogs. It is this mindset that drives Plastic’s philosophy of creating distinguished, signature releases in multiple genres.

Comets on Fire/ Major Stars
Live in Europa (psych rock)
Widely regarded as one of the best psych rock releases of the aught years, this live recording captures these two psych heavies in peak, explosive form. Recorded live on July 10, 2003 at Europa in Brooklyn, NY, this limited-edition, vinyl-only release preceded Comets on Fire being signed later that year to the iconic indie label Sub Pop of Seattle.

Dan Melchior’s Broke Revue
Gud’ Bye Ta Sluggo (garage rock)
Prolific singer-songwriter/ artist Dan Melchior reconvened his original band the Broke Revue in the studio to record some new songs and a cover of Little Willie John’s “I’m Shakin’” to take out on the road. This ep sees Mr. Melchior delivering heavy injections of his signature garage blues.

Parts and Labor
7” Single (alternative indie rock)
Formed in 2002 by BJ Warshaw and Dan Friel, Parts and Labor added drummer Chris Weingarten in 2005 to record this 7” single for Plastic Records. On the strength of the featured song “A Great Divide” the band was promptly signed to Midwest independent Jagjaguwar, part of the Secretly Label Group. Also, the silk-screened fold-out cover was custom created for the record by Matt and Kim, featured in the book Art Record Covers.

The Lot Six
Get Baked on Youth Kulture (rock)
In 2005, the Boston quintet The Lot Six wanted to escape the rote form of a recorded set and and partnered with Plastic Records to create an intimately framed context for their most fully-realized cohesive set of songs on record. It’s as if the band were playing in a smoky cabaret overwhelming the room with power chords and an undeniable sense of urgency.

Dan Melchior
Fire Breathing Clones on Cellular Phones (singer-songwriter)
Having already established his reputation for fierce garage rock with his band the Broke Revue, Mr. Melchior delivers songs that feature some of his most introspective writing on record while expanding his use of instrumentation bringing horns and congas into the mix. This unique, understated set shows another side of Dan Melchior’s talent.

Electric Kulintang
Dialects (world)
World-renowned percussionist Susie Ibarra brings the Kulintang, an instrument consisting of bells from her native Philippines, to a new level. Accompanied by Robert Rodriguez (Miami Sound Machine) to form Electric Kulintang, the record incorporates field recordings from Cotabato, Mindanao to provide a human sense of intimacy referencing the kulintang’s humble origins amidst Ms. Ibarra’s ethereal compositions. Wire magazine listed Dialects in its top ten world music records of 2008.

Burning Star Core
Challenger (avant garde/ experimental)
Classically trained violinist Spencer Yeh recorded under the name Burning Star Core throughout the New York City experimental noise scene of the aught years. Reviews of the recording describe it as a compositional high point for Mr. Yeh, and is widely considered one of the touchstone releases in the genre.
